Are Cows Committing Suicide?
64Have you read any stories about these cows that are mysteriously falling off cliffs in the Swiss Alps? Really strange. Seems more than two dozen cows have fallen to their deaths in a span of just 3 days. Authorities are flying in helicopters to remove the carcasses before they become a health problem.
Cows are usually set free to graze the Alps at high altitudes, and some do fall, but nothing like these numbers.
Locals in the area blame the severe weather and storms that probably spooked the cows and they fell. Scientists believe that the animals were all tightly bunched together and looking for more food fell off the cliff one after another. They dismiss the committed suicide theory.
If that's the case how do they explain another story of approximately 30 cows falling off a cliff in Fresno River California last week? Nearby neighbors were complaining about the smell with all the carcasses laying around for more than a week.
An investigation is on the way to make sure the decaying cattle has not contaminated the drinking water.
The rancher who owns the cattle has no explanation and has been trying to remove them but has requested the help of heavy equipment to do so.
County environmental officials, have said that the threat to the water supply should be minimal, but they are still testing.
Wow how strange this is. What are your thoughts? Some people are even wondering if the meat is being donated, with the way economic times are today. Don't know if I would want any. I think they should be tested first. Would "mad cow disease" be responsible for this? Just a thought.
This was such a strange story that caught my eye, I felt it was worth writing about. Thought I would share it with you. Not earth shattering but different don't you think?

They were just in the MOOd to jump! :)
Cool hub. I've also recently heard of this. It is a strange occurrance. Now you've got me wondering - What do they do with that meat?
oh, not again that cow mad disease is not so good at all, make me think and wonder,
nice thought you have shared Kerry, and how can I console you the LIONS lost yesterday, but their QB is handsome LOL< Steelers lost too, have a good day today? how are you? Maita
I do so enjoy weird stories and this certainly is an odd one. I don't think I'd want to eat that meat that had been laying around for too long and would not want to eat any suicide beef.
Interesting! Poor cows... I kind of think to myself about going vegetarian sometimes.. Great food though, but I cant say no to my fish and chicken!!
These female cows must have been sick puppies. I guess bulls have better sense...
I think that they found out there was talk of a tax on their gas emissions and they said f*** it and jumped.
Interesting story. Maybe these cows were having vertigo? With the earthquakes and other random weather and climate changes, it may have affected their senses as well.
Just making some wild guesses..:D
Love the story, could it be a personality disorder - do they believe they are lemmings? And would mushroom meat work like hash brownies?
Here's my thoughts that will make the story even stranger. Cows have, in the past, been the victims of animal mutilation believed to have been carried out by either aliens or secret military forces. The aliens theory came about because the corpses are drained of all blood and have laser precision cuts into the flesh and UFOs have sometimes been seen in the areas around the time of the incidents. I am wondering if the cows were scared of a UFO that was hovering over them?
See this link for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_mutilation
What can I say, this is an original and super article. Nice research.
WEIRD!!!
I've heard of wild cattle when yarded giving up theghost and just pining away, but cows jumping off a cliff - nope that is strange - wouldn't eat the meat if it hasn'tbeen bleed out - will ask my brother about this he is a cattleman and he has seen some strange things happen with cattle - anyway another good hub -thank you
Well, this was definitely the most bizarre thing I've read all week - interesting!
I reckon their stomachs got bloated with gas due to them moving up from the lower slopes to the more rarefied atmosphere higher up. This made them lighter on their feet and they couldn't stop themselves from tripping - and that was nothing to do with the brownies. Hi K got your message, thanks. Although I am late on this one, I like topical hubs.
Must be something about cows that attracts the strangest of happenings. I once went camping, in the UK (it rains here a lot) and when we got up in the morning 4 cows in the field next to us (who I do not think were camping) had been struck dead by lightning. Great smell of steak to go with breakfast. Stranger things have probably happened.
I had never heard this bizarre story but I really enjoyed this hub. I think odds are low on cow suicide but there could be many reasons cows are dying that have to do with environment. No matter what the reason is, it is unsettling. Thx for a very unique hub. I enjoyed it. Up and Awesome.

Mad cow disease only crops up in cows who have eaten other cows (in the food the farmers give them... the ultimate recycling! Pretty sure it's illegal to do that in the states now and I seriously doubt cows are fed this type of food in the alps either.) Anyway... a lot could account for this. Gases leaking from shifting rocks could make them woozy and kill them. Bad storms could reduce visibility and cause accidents. They could have eaten a plant they don't normally eat and gotten woozy off it. Heck, reindeer have been seen getting high off mushrooms... maybe that could have done something. I seriously doubt they're purposely committing suicide though!
