Bon Jovi Rocks For The Homeless
64Bon Jovi
The band Bon Jovi have been touring for the last 25 years all over the world. But this time it's different, because over the last 6 years John Bon Jovi the bands leader has been working with his foundation called "The John Bon Jovi Soul Foundation" out of Philadelphia that fights homelessness.
This years tour will be different because he is on a research mission, a mission to go to as many shelters as time will permit and learn as much as possible about this issue and how to combat it.
Bon Jovi's new tour is taking him into venues that he doesn't usually visit on the road. Such as a shelter for hardcore alcoholics in Seattle. Or a tour of Skid Row in Los Angles. And maybe a squatters village in Sacramento. All this to learn as much as he can and how his foundation can help.
His Visits
Before he kicked off his tour with two shows at Seattle's KeyArena in February, Bon Jovi toured one of the cities most recognized homeless programs, a building run by the Downtown Emergency Service Center that provides homeless alcoholics, many of whom have serious mental illness a place to live.
It is said that the program saves the taxpayers more than $4 million a year in social service and jail costs and creates a safe haven where residents are more likely to get sober. This is according to a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association last year.
Among other stops, will be a visit to Skid Row in Los Angles early next month. He will be touring with Steve Lopez who wrote "The Soloist" which became a movie about a homeless schizophrenic but wildly talented cellist. Lopez feels that this tour of Skid Row will be an eye-opener and give Bon Jovi a real sense of just how many people are suffering in this economy, and just how many people are dealing with a combination of financial, physical and mental health issues. And the sad part is many of them are veterans.
The singer didn't specify which aspects of the programs he might incorporate in his future work at his foundation, but did say that various problems of homelessness require different solutions. And you can be sure that the 47 year old rocker will continue with those solutions to try an combat this issue with the help of others for many, many years to come.
The Foundation
The John Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, was founded in October of 2006. It is a non-profit organization, dedicated to bringing change and help to those in need ONE SOUL AT A TIME.
The foundation started it's work through the localized efforts of the Philadelphia Soul arena football team, of which John Bon Jovi is part owner. The foundation has quickly expanded it's work to have a national presence to help rebuild the less fortunate' s lives as much as possible. And to become a role model in the communities.
The JBJ Foundation with the help of many have continued to fight homelessness with the building of affordable housing, establishing community kitchens and cleaning up vacant lots in blighted neighborhoods. The Foundation since 2006 has built more than 150 units of affordable housing in seven cities.
If you are thinking of getting involved or wanted to contribute to a charity I would highly recommend visiting the JBJ Foundation web-site and clicking on the donate button. Or volunteer or donate in your own community. The idea here is to just get involved and help combat this issue. Due to economic times now more than ever people need our help. Be a voice like Bon Jovi, you too can help make a difference.
I hope you read my other stories on the homeless:

I have always loved their singing and didn't know they were doing this. What a worthwhile cause. It is so nice to read something positive about a celebrity since we typically only hear the bad things. Great hub!
thanks for this update on Bon Jovi as he is a great artist and has always been open in giving back...Bon Jovi is next on my concert list...
Touching story. Makes me like the guy even more. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I'd heard there was a free Bon Jovi concert in Philadelphia. Didn't know the details until now. That is pretty cool.
Always great to see an artist that can see beyond their own self-involved bubble. I've been a big fan of his music since I was a college student twenty years ago. And his charitable work has made me like him all the more. Kinda like Bono from U2.
Very responsible hub!!!!
thanks for the information K, I like him a lot, I listen to his song but I didnt know he has a foundation, good job BON JOVBI, and for the writer as well, hehe -- keep the most of it, Maita
Thanks for this hub.I like Bon Jovi very much:)
Great Hub! I went to one of his private shows in Nashville about 4 years ago & he is a well rounded dude!
I am not surprised that Bon Jovi has involved himself in such a worthwhile cause. I think he rocks! By the way, so does your hub.
I didn't know Bon Jovi supported/ founded a homeless foundation. My daughter is going to see him soon; I will pass this bit of information along........
thank you
I had never heard of the JBJ Soul Foundation before. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I have come to understand through reading your Hubs that you are more than an observer/reporter of the less fortunate. You are an advocate. I hope you have every success in bringing the struggle of homelessness to the front of folks minds. In the words of John Lennon... "There are no problems. Only solutions", and it's high time they are found! Keep up the good work. And my heart is on your side!
These guys do some terrific work. I just love them and will always be a fan. How unselfish.

There are so many entertainers that make way more money than is really neccessary for one to survive on. I have gotten into many a heated debated on how overpaid athletes and entertainers squander their money instead of using it to help the people that gave it to them. It is always such a relief to hear about how people like Bon Jovi are actually doing something with their talents and not just talking about it in some thirty second ad they got paid to shoot. Please keep the good word spreading!
I am the biggest JBJ fan ever and I love that he gives back to the community. I'm still hoping to have a one night stand with him one day LOL haven't given up hope yet hahaha. Nice hub enjoyed reading it xx
Thank you K, I won, thank you, thank you!
I love Bon Jovi! Great hub!
I was crazy in love with Bon Jovi as a teenager! Great hub.
I simply love him.. He is a rockstar and he is doing a show for the very noble cause.. may god bless him and the hubber too for writing about him ;)
Great to see people making the world better!
you know K he has done so much and that always impressed me - my gosh look he even dedicated one his music videos about it with all proceeds going to the same cause. I volunteer for Habitat, not sure if you have it there, well it's worldwide so you must. I love being part of donating my time to hammering nails into the very wood that will soon form a house and make one less homeless person, not homeless
thanks for another great stride at spreading awareness
you may not know it but your making a difference
doesn't matter how
but you are
